Pick the tool you are leaving. Each page compares the whole field on free plan limits, whether a time clock is included and what the first paid plan really costs, rather than arguing for one answer.
Checked against each vendor's own pricing page on 29 September 2026. Emplora is our product, and it appears on every list.
What each one is good and bad at
The short version of every tool in these comparisons, ours included.
Emplora
Our productScheduling for shift-based teams, where staff open their rota from a QR code or a PIN instead of an account.
Strengths
- Employees need no email address, no account and no app install, so a whole team is on the schedule in an afternoon
- Flat pricing rather than per user, so the bill does not climb as you hire
- The free plan includes the full schedule builder, not a cut-down version of it
Limitations
- No time clock or timesheets on any plan, so hours for payroll come from somewhere else
- Shift swaps, time-off requests and notifications start on the paid plan
- Newer and smaller than the rest of this list, with fewer integrations
Homebase
Scheduling, a time clock and light HR for small US hourly teams, with payroll sold alongside.
Strengths
- A genuine time clock on the free plan, which almost nothing else offers
- Flat per-location pricing, so growing from 10 to 40 staff costs the same
- Deep US payroll and POS integrations
Limitations
- The free plan stopped at 10 employees, down from 20, so small teams hit the wall sooner
- Time off, break rules, departments and labor costing are all paid
- Built around US labor rules and US payroll providers
Deputy
Enterprise-grade scheduling with demand forecasting, labor compliance and auto-scheduling.
Strengths
- The most capable scheduling engine here: forecasting, auto-scheduling and compliance rules
- Timesheets, the time clock and swaps are all in the entry plan
- A trial of up to 31 days, the longest evaluation window of any tool on this list
Limitations
- No free plan at all, so there is nothing to fall back to when the trial ends
- The $30 monthly minimum means a five-person team pays $30, not $27.50
- More product than a single-site team of ten usually needs
When I Work
A polished scheduling and time-tracking app aimed at hourly teams, sold per user.
Strengths
- One of the best mobile experiences in the category, and staff need little training
- Shift swaps, availability and messaging are well built and used heavily
- Cheap at small headcounts if you are happy to pay from day one
Limitations
- The free plan that made it popular is gone, which surprises people looking it up today
- Seats are sold in bundles of five or ten, so a 12-person team pays for more than 12
- Per-user pricing gets expensive as the team grows
Connecteam
An all-in-one deskless workforce app: scheduling, GPS time clock, chat, forms and training.
Strengths
- The most complete free plan under 10 people: auto-scheduling, templates and a GPS clock included
- Chat, forms, tasks and training in the same app, which suits field teams
- Flat pricing to 30 users once you pay
Limitations
- The 10-user cap counts archived staff, so turnover quietly consumes seats
- One schedule and one time clock on free, so a second site forces an upgrade
- Paid pricing is per hub, and scheduling is only one of the three hubs
Sling
Shift scheduling from Toast, with the largest free user cap in the category.
Strengths
- Free for up to 30 users, twice the cap of most rivals
- The free plan is not a stub: templates, shift offers, time-off requests and announcements are included
- Cheapest upgrade path of the paid tools here
Limitations
- No time tracking at all on the free plan, so no hours and no timesheets
- Shift swaps are a paid feature, even though shift offers are free
- Employee unavailability and calendar sync are paid too
7shifts
Restaurant-specific scheduling with tip pooling, POS integrations and labor tools.
Strengths
- Built for restaurants: tips, POS integrations and labor targets speak the same language as your floor
- Shift trades and claiming open shifts are free, which most free tiers withhold
- Flat per-location pricing once you pay
Limitations
- No time clock on the free plan, so scheduling only
- One location on free, hard
- Team messaging is paid, so day-to-day comms happen elsewhere
Try the one with nothing for your team to install
Emplora is free for one location and up to 15 employees. Staff open their schedule from a QR code, so there is nothing to sign up for on their side.
